An account of warfare and relationships between Native American Indian tribes and the White settlers from the early 17th-century through the end of the 19th-century. The book appears to have been published shortly after the Battle (or massacre) of Wounded Knee. There is commentary and details on torture, murders, scalping, rape, battles, massacres, and more. Northrop also includes ideas on how to "civilize the savages" and change them of their customs, culture, and military issues. Northrop himself states in the preface of this work: "This work embraces a full account of all the memorable Indian wars in the United States, together with a record of terrible personal encounters with the Red Men, hairbreadth escapes, thrilling captures,and bloody massacres." 600 pages with numerous illustrations throughout, several that are full page and a few that are in red ink. The book is in acceptable/good condition. Aside from a penciled price on the end paper there are no other markings, tears or dog ears to the pages. The front cover along with the front end papers title page and preface are detached from the binding. The rest of the binding is intact. The spine has a few pieces missing at the top and the bottom.
