Description: This is an incredibly rare find in pattern land. Patterns by Mme Demorest are very scarce, often only surfacing once every few years. This is the envelope only, I'm afraid, but it would look lovely in a picture frame, wouldn't it?The envelope is in rough and very fragile condition, as you can see from the scan. It is printed on both sides. The interior side has instructions printed in French, German, and Italian. This pattern number dates to between 1870 to 1878.Madame Demorest (a.k.a. Ellen Louise Demorest) was a clever businesswoman and US fashion arbiter. She was a successful milliner and is often credited with the invention of mass-produced tissue-paper sewing patterns She established her own company to sell the patterns, which were adaptations of the latest French fashions, and also published a magazine to promote them (beginning in 1860). Her dressmaking patterns made French styles accessible to ordinary women and greatly influenced American fashion in the mid-to-late 1800s.
