Description: (In German) PREDIGTEN UBER GEWOHNLICHE PERIKOPEN UND FREIE TEXTE [Sermons] by Christian Ludwig Couard. v. 1 (of 2). Berlin, Verlag von Ludwig Dehmigke,1851. 3rd Edition. Half leather. Half leather binding with dark boards that are heavily scuffed and showing the lighter board underneath; edgewear and chipping, particularly from shelving. Light brown calf leather is dry and cracked; corners are worn. Spine is worn and split on front vertical edge. Spine tip is missing a half inch piece of leather and spine tail is rubbed and worn, showing board beneath. The spine carries a 1" x 1.5" paste-on white label with mostly illegible writing; "Couard Band 1" is legible; very faint marking on the spine's leather is too faint to read. All three page edges are dyed red, somewhat faint in places from handling and thumbing. Inside front board has some notations and an inked name. The front hinge is split half way, being held by the leather and the back hinge is split, very loose, but held (see photos). The sewing is square and tight, no loose pages. There are two almost identical title pages, the 1st on brown paper, followed by a frontis plate portrait of the author and a title page on white paper as the rest of the text. The text paper is barely toned, quite clean, and handsomely printed on quality paper. It should be noted that a reader has added some very faint pencil marks and marginal lining, mostly very unobtrusive (a few photo examples are included). This is a rare theological work. 5.5" x 9" 796 p. Couard (1793-1865) was a Lutheran theologian, preacher at St. George Church in Berlin, his portrait on the frontis. The first edition of this work was published in 1824. This, the 3rd edition, consists of 2 volumes, volume 1 containing the sermons from the 1st Sunday of advent to the Sunday of Exaudi, or 6th Sunday after Easter.
