Note shade/faded margin on bottom of lithograph, see photos for actual condition. Mariano Fortuny gained a large, international reputation for his Orientalist scenes and costume pieces. In the latter category his costume depictions were often set in the eighteenth century. This original etching was published by Appleton & Company, New York in 1867. "A Gentleman of Gouda" is a superb example of the etched art created by the Spanish artist, Mariano Jose Fortuny y Carbo. Born in Spain he was orphaned at a young age and raised by his grandfather. Fortuny's first formal art studies took place in Barcelona in the studio of the sculptor, Talarn Ribot. In 1858 he studied art in Rome and completed his education in Paris, under Gerome (1866). After that date Fortuny travelled and worked in such countries as England, Spain and Morocco, but called Italy his home. Today the art of Mariano Fortuny is included in such major collections as the Hermitage, the Prado, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins as published in New York by Appleton & Company. Signed and dated by the artist in the plate to the lower right. A finely printed impression with full plate tone and in good condition throughout. Altogether "A Gentleman of Gouda" represents a fine, original example of the influential art of Mariano Fortuny.
