Description: Impressionist Twilight Sky Over Cayuga Lake by William Charles Baker (1872-1958), listed NY artist, oil on artist board, 10" by 14 1/8", signed lower right, fairly recent gilded closed corner frame, 15 3/4" by 19 3/4". Artist studied at Cornell University starting 1898, stayed on to teach drawing in the Sibley College (engineering), then traveled to Paris in 1904 to study with J.P. Laurens at Academie Julian. Returning to Ithaca, he became professor of drawing in the College of Agriculture at Cornell, a position he held until retiring in 1938. Although exhibiting his work widely, he did not join national art societies or want dealers to handle his paintings; most were given as gifts from the artist. Condition very good for age, a few small scratches/dents with corresponding retouch, lower sky area shows some faint vertical ridges (not scratches) that appear to be from the underlying support layer without affecting paint layer, frame has had its rabbet enlarged sometime in its history, finish without notable defects.
