Description: Martha Walter was an American painter best known for her impressionistic depictions of beach scenes, portraits, and landscapes. Born on March 19, 1875 in Philadelphia, PA, Walter studied at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia under the painter William Chase. In 1909, she won the Toppan Prize and Cresson Traveling Scholarship, allowing her the opportunity to travel and study in Europe. Upon returning to the United States, the artist set up a studio in Gloucester, MA, where she worked primarily on seascapes. Today, her works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., among others. The artist died in January of 1976 in Gloucester, MA. Over 100 large, full-color reproductions of the works of one of the greatest female impressionists, taken from an exhibition at the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia in 2002. Limited to a print run of only 1500 copies (of which almost a thousand were exported out of the country) this rare volume has become a highly sought-after item for the serious collector.
