Description: Scarce magazine/newspaper: THE GRAND NAVAL REVIEW - Supplement to the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, April 26, 1856; it measures roughly 11x16 inches and has 31 pages; beautifully illustrated with many full-age engravings and a map - I have seen some of these pages sold individually as prints, but the full intact supplement is pretty hard to find. The first article is "The Great Naval Battle at Spithead" and has a full-page map titled "Plan of Spithead, showing the Proposed Evolutions at the Review of the Fleet by Her Majesty, on Wed. the 23rd of April, 1856". Some of the engravings are from paintings by maritime artist John Wilson Carmichael; others were "sketched by E. Weedon"; some of the other illustrations show "Pic-nic in the Baltic", "Excursions of the Floating Bridge at Portsmouth", Royal mail Clipper "Schomburg", a fox hunting illustration by John Leech, sheet music for a song called "Florence Nightengale", Spring Meeting (horse race) at Sebastopol", "New Uniforms of the Coldstream Guards", "The Great Cemetery at Woking", and several more. Condition is VG (bottom edge of pages were cropped too close and are missing the bottom line of text on some pages; one page has a slice and another has a taped tear; corner chip to cover; a few other small 1-inch tears; back page has small spots and two 2-inch tears; overall, pretty well-preserved).
