The last photo is to show similar items selling with higher price. This beautiful brass and sterling silver 5.5" box was designed by renowned Greek jeweler, Ilias Lalaounis (1920 - 2013). The cylindrical piece has ribbed sides and a fitted lid that features a sterling silver inset disc finished with neoclassical relief decoration depicting dolphin and shell. The perimeter of the disc is finished with more rings. The box and lid are good original condition and fit together securely, keeping the contents of the box safe inside. As a vintage piece, the box shows appropriate signs of age and use consisting of tarnish and light scratches splitsto the surface. All has been left "as is". The box is 5.5" in diameter and stands 1.625" tall. The visible portion of the sterling disc is 3.5" in diameter and is hallmarked with the fineness mark "925" and inscribed makers mark "ilias LALAoUNIS". The box weighs in at 12oz. This lovely brass and sterling box would be a great addition to a collection of pieces by Lalaounis, or works equally well as a stand alone decorative accent. A fine piece perfect for display or storing small treasures. A note on the designer: Lalaounis trained as a goldsmith with his uncle's jewelry business and, according to company literature, "decided to breathe new life into Greek museum artifacts and transform them into jewelry by reviving age old techniques while also introducing the use of modern technology." He opened his own atelier in the 1960's and was recognized in 1990 by the Institut de France, Academie des Beaux Arts et des Lettres for his contribution to jewelry design.
