Description: Offered by Over The Blue Horizon is a great issue from the vintge but still very well-regarded Japanese MARU SPECIAL series: “Imperial Japanese Navy Battleship KIRISHIMA, Volume 35, November 1977.” The MARU SPECIAL series was published from 1975 to 1987 and each of the 135 volumes focused on a naval vessel, family of vessels, or campaign, most dealing with the Imperial Japanese Navy. The MARU SPECIALs offered a very popular combination of period photographs (some with rare detail), line drawings, color drawings in a few cases, and affordability. Although printed with Japanese text and regardless of the difficulty of translation, the MARU SPECIALs remain very popular with naval historians and advanced modelers and these out-of-print gems are still frequently referenced. This particular MARU SPECIAL features the KIRISHIMA, a 26,230 ton KONGO-class battlecruiser completed at Nagasaki, Japan in 1915. Modernized and reclassified as a battleship in 1936, the upgraded 32,156 ton capital ship was considered fast but comparatively lightly armed and armored. She played an active role in the first year of the Pacific war, participating in the Pearl Harbor attack, East Indies operations, and the raids into the Indian Ocean. While engaged in a night surface action off Guadalcanal in November, 1942, she was heavily damaged by the USS Washington and scuttled. This 68 page, 7.25 x 10.25 inch vintage classic has some great photographs and well-done line drawings. Condition is FAIR+ bordering on GOOD -- the covers show light shelf wear and the edges also show some wear.
