His later music has trended more toward the former and the 31-minute violin concerto here (2007), a response to the intense passions of meeting his second wife, is an unabashed, neo-Romantic work with "big tunes" that is in a direct line from Korngold. The viola work (2005) returns to a crossoverish style, with Rachmaninov and Prokofiev often suggested by the openhearted lyricism of its first three movements while the finale, in response to a direct request by soloist Bashmet for jazz elements, recreates a jazz bar, complete with drummer beginning the movement in swing rhythm.
