The new aircraft was supposed to replace the outdated Percival P.40 Prentice trainer. According to these requirements, the P.56 Provost aircraft was developed by Percival. It was a cantilever low-wing aircraft with a non-retractable tricycle landing gear with a tail wheel. The first prototype (WE522) of the aircraft made its maiden flight on 24 February 1950. Three prototypes were built: two with an Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah 18 engine and one with an Alvis Leonides Mk 25 engine. According to the test results, the aircraft was adopted by the British Air Force as a training aircraft in 1953 under the designation Provost T.Mk 1. In 1954 Percival Aircraft became part of the Hanting Group. The first aircraft were received by the elementary training squadron of the South Kearney Flight School. Until 1959, 461 aircraft were built.
