Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare November 1959 "Playgoer" playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the HAROLD ARLEN and JOHNNY MERCER musical flop "SARATOGA" at the Shubert Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would open December 7th, 1959 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City and close after only 80 performances.) ..... The musical starred HOWARD KEEL and CAROL LAWRENCE and featured ODETTE MYRTIL, JANE DARWELL, WARDE DONOVAN, CAROL BRICE, TUN TUN, JAMES MILLHOLLIN, TRUMAN GAIGE, RICHARD GRAHAM, VIRGINIA CAPERS and ISABELLA HOOPES ..... CREDITS: Book by MORTON DaCOSTA based on the novel "Saratoga Trunk" by EDNA FERBER; Music by HAROLD ARLEN (the prolific composer of "You Said It", "Cotton Club Parade", "Life Begins at 8:40", "Hooray for What", "Bloomer Girl", "St. Louis Woman", "House of Flowers", "Jamaica", "Saratoga" and the classic film "The Wizard of Oz"); Lyrics by JOHNNY MERCER; Sets and Costumes designed by CECIL BEATON (winner of the Tony Award in both categories); Choreographed by RALPH BEAUMONT; Directed by MORTON DaCOSTA; Produced by ROBERT FRYER ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Al Fresco", "Bon Appetit", "Lessons In Love", "The Parks of Paris" and "You For Me" which were cut prior to the Broadway opening ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a light fold across the middle, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian.
