Description: AGE RELATED DISCOLORATION AND LIKELY UNSEEN FOOD STAIN DISCOLORATION. - REAR COVER HAS VERY MINOR SURFACE LOSS AS WELL AS RESIDUE STUCK TO IT FROM HAVING BEEN IN A SCRAP BOOK. IT APPEARS THAT THE ONLY LOSS IS ON THE UPPER LEFT CORNER OF THE REAR COVER WHILE THE REST IS PAPER STUCK TO THE REAR. - THERE IS A CLEAR GLOSSY COATING TO THE MENU. LIKELY THE DRINK RINGS AND OTHER DISCOLORATIONS APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN CLEANED OFF BUT 80 YEARS GIVES THOSE OLD STAINS PLENTY OF TIME TO SHOW UP. - THE MENU IS NOT DATED, THOUGH WHAT APPEARS TO BE A DATE CODE ON LOWER REAR CORNER READS "10-3". MY DATING IS BASED ON THE LOCATION OF THE MENU IN THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR 1942 IN A SCRAP BOOK. (I counted 127 locations which puts it after 1939 with 107 locations. What is interesting is that between December 1941 and 1944, all but twelve of the locations closed due to war rationing. Since most of the locations on this menu also show up on a 1949 menu, I would assume that the properties were reopened after the war but there are quite a few on this menu that are gone by the time the 1949 menu was printed. - I have seen many menus sold with the rear cover being 100% Howard Johnson's locations but could not find a single other menu that only showed the bottom of the rear cover listing locations. - Based on other menus kept, this would have been Nassau County or Queens County Measures 8.5" x 11" when closed. Original paper clip has minor surface rust. The best way to date the menu would be the list of "ice cream shoppes and restaurants" on the rear. Just a few years later, the entire rear cover was covered with locations. PLEASE USE ZOOM FUNCTION ON ALL PHOTOS AS THEY ARE PART OF THE DESCRIPTION. paramountmiddle- call it100
