Signatures: "Horace Maynard/Knoxville/Tennessee" and, on verso: "Edward Kent./Associate Justice of/Sup. Ind. Court of Mai[ne]/Bangor M[aine]/Sept. 1865.", 5¾x2¼. HORACE MAYNARD (1814-1882) served as U.S. Postmaster General in the Cabinet of President Rutherford B. Hayes from June 2, 1880-March 5, 1881. He had previously served as a Republican U.S. Representative from Tennessee in 1857-1863 and 1866-1875, as Tennessee's Attorney General (1863-1865) and as U.S. Minister to Turkey (1875-1880). Maynard had also been an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Tennessee in 1874. EDWARD KENT (1802-1877) served two non-consecutive terms (1838-1839 and 1841-1842) as Governor of Maine before being appointed to Maine's Supreme Court in 1859.
