Description: Reminscing Art 8.5 X 11 Holy Land " Dead Sea, North End " in 1891 Reprint On Pro Glossy paper Holy Land, embracing prominent views illustrative of Bible history and scenes in the life of our Lord. by Stuart, Charles Macaulay, THE title is the popular, but never the Biblical, name of this curious body ofwater into which the river Jordan makes its final issue. It is forty-sixmiles in length, at the widest part is ten miles across, and it covers anarea of nearly three hundred square miles. It is about thirteen hundred feetbelow the sea-level, and on the east and west is shut in hy hills. The watercontains twenty-five per cent of solid matter, hence sinking is an impossibility; it isbeautifully clear, but bitter and salt to the taste, and no fish can live in it. Thepicture gives a view from the north end, and shows a little island composed entirelyof stones. The lake stretches away in placid beauty, but all around is the desolationof death. At the south end there is a range of salt hills, ont of which rises theisolated shaft known among the Arabs as ‘ Lot’s Wife.” This was the region ofLot’s “Garden of the Lord,” and the earliest seat of Phoenician civilization. Herewere the great “cities of the plain,” which for their gross wickedness were given upof God to destruction by fire from heaven.
