Narrative: Zierikzec is situated on the Island of Schouwen, with a harbor communicating with the eastern Scheldt. It is a walled town, and still retains several of its ancient gates. Seen from a little distance, the town is charming. At the left of the dike appears the great tower of the Old Church; then red roofs, illumined by a subdued light, detach themselves from the grayish, transparent, and luminous background. Just on the other bank of the Scheldt we see the gleam of yellow gables. Farther on, to the right, we see the gate of the Porte Occidental, a massive structure with four elegant turrets. The aspect of the people around us, as we enter the town, is new and strange. A Zeeland gentleman of importance, and well versed in the manners of this isle, and who possesses an estate here, says these peasant women are sirens, — beautiful from the head to the shoulders, but with the bodies of fishes; that is to say, they have retained their large, rich, lace caps, but as for the rest, so far as is in their power, they follow the Parisian fashions. The Tower of the Zierikzee Hotel de Ville is a blending of the Gothic and the Renaissance. A Neptune, resting upon an elliptical arch, surmounts the tower. In its upper portion are oriel windows, separated by attached bands painted yellow. The whole tower is supported by a carved pyramid, from which depend yellow bits of carving very graceful in appearance, and which resemble clusters of grapes. This pyramid is in its turn supported by a threelobed arch, placed upon pillars upheld by Doric capitals.. Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy!
