McDonnell F-101B Voodoo Designed to meet a USAAF requirement for a long-range turbojet powered fighter, the F-101 was first flown (as the XF-88 prototype) on October 20th, 1948. Its initial mission as bomber escort was modified during development to include that of all-weather interceptor, nuclear fighter-bomber and photo reconnaissance aircraft. Reconnaissance variants saw extensive use during the Vietnam war while interceptors remained in service with several Air National Guard units until 1982. Ultimately, the Voodoo's career was rather short-lived although it did help pave the way towards the highly successful F-4 Phantom II that replaced it. The Air National Guard received the first of their McDonnell F-101Bs in November 1969. The New York ANG 136rd Fighter Interceptor Squadron of the 107th Fighter Interceptor Group didn’t receive the F-101B until 1971 and flew them until 1982 when they were replaced by the F-4 Phantom II. Formed as Fighter Squadron in 1946 the 136th became a FIS in 1971 and in 1980 became a TFS. From its creation in 1946 the 136rd always flew fighters but in 1994 they were given a new role of aerial refuelling.
