Description: HO SCALEPROTO 2000 8354 EMD BL2BOSTON AND MAINE #1553 New in box, B&M EMD BL2. EMD BL2:The BL2 was built by General Motors EMD division, which were the same makers as the successful EMD F3 & F7 diesel locomotives. However, where the F3's production numbers were in the ~1100 A unit and ~700 B unit range, and the F7's numbers were ~2400 A units, and ~1500 B units, there were only 58 BL2's ever made in the stop gap between the F3 and F7 during 1947-1949. The locomotive's failure was due to the locomotive trying to fill too many roles all at once (was presented as a switching locomotive, yet didn't have full-length walkways needed for switching, and yet was built as a carbody, which was to try and evoke high-class passenger trains, yet wasn't truly built for passenger service. Worse, the thing was horrible to work on (but us modelers don't have to worry about that!). Even though the locomotive wasn't successful, it has a very interesting style to it unlike anything else ever made, and adds some unique interest among early diesel layouts.
