Description: Birthplace of the Mormon Church... History of Wayne County, NY The early days of Wayne County, NY, and its various towns and townships are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 15 Page Booklet, reprinted primarily from two hard-to-find books: the 1841 edition of Historical Collections of the State of New York by John Warner Barber and Henry Howe, and New York, a Guide to the Empire State, a WPA project. The spiral-bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper, with the print enlarged for easier reading. A clear vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. The communities mentioned include: Arcadia, Butler, Galen, Clyde, Huron, Lyons, Alloway, Macedon, Marion, Marion Corners, Newark, Ontario, Palmyra, Rose, Savannah, Sodus, Walworth, Walworth Corners, Williamson, Pulteneyville, Williamson Corners, Walcott Red Creek and Hydeville. Among the many and diverse topics in the booklet are: A Very Old Oak; the Early Beginnings of the Mormon Sect in Palmyra; Hill Cumorah, and the Joseph Smith Farm; Action of the British fleet at Sodus in 1813; the Invasion of Pulteneyville in 1814; the Great Ontario Fruit Belt; the Site of the Fox Home "the birthplace of spiritualism" -- where a murdered peddler slammed doors, rocked beds and rapped out messages; and some interesting bits of trivia. The booklet has no index, but some of the names and surnames mentioned are: Sir William Pultney, C. Williamson, Van Wickle, James P. Bartle, Crane, Martin Harris, Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, Hiram Page, Hyrum Smith, Parley B. Pratt, Sidney Rigdon, Peterson, General Burnet, General Porter, General Smith, General Swift, Dorothy Perkins, Admiral William T. Sampson, the Fox sisters (spiritualists). ILLUSTRATIONS depict a Southern view of Clyde, Main Street in Palmyra, and The Mormon Hill (which is in Ontario County). The Howe/Barber history covers the development of this area until about 1841, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. There's also a small map of the area from a 1948 booklet printed by the New York Telephone Company. Wouldn't this make a unique gift?
