Description: The bridges of Pittsburgh play an important role in the city’s transportation system and its history. Without bridges, the Pittsburgh region would be a series of fragmented valleys, hillsides, river plains, and isolated communities. Its first river bridges, made of wood and long since replaced, opened in 1818 at Smithfield Street and 1819 at Sixth Street (then St. Clair Street). The city’s oldest in-service bridge is the current Smithfield Street Bridge, which opened in 1883. Pittsburgh, at one time, had 446 bridges, though a number that has been disputed. But, with its proximity to three major rivers, and countless hills and ravines, Pittsburgh is known as the “City of Bridges”. This card, published by “I. Robbins & Son” with a “CT American Art” center bar chronicles a defunct “Federal Street Bridge by Night”. I could not find any information on the Federal Street Bridge or on a goggle map of Pittsburg, not even of its demise (where is Bridge Hunter when you need him). In any event, it is on this WB card (1915-30) that is in excellent condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image that is almost glossy. The reverse is also clean. It is a nice card of a bridge that is gone. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible. Corrections appreciated. If this your card, it will be mailed promptly upon receipt of payment......
