Runkel Click images to enlarge Description Scarce Original 18th Century Pre-Napoleonic War British, Highly Etched Officers Horseman's Cavalry Saber by J.J. Runkel - Solingen c1784-1790 This late c1780's British Cavalry Officer’s Saber was made in Germany by J.J. Runkel (Solingen) prior to Napoleon’s invasion of the country in 1806 and is a very good example of a British sword that saw service throughout the Napoleonic wars. The 33.6 inch single-edged curved blade has a full-length single fuller on both sides below a flat spine that terminates in a wide spear point. The blade has a 7.0 inch upper double edge. The blade’s single edge was service sharpened. The blade is bright with an even, pale gray patina and is free of rust with only a few even speckle patches of very shallow pitting along the length of the sword blade. The engraving is dark and beautifully clear . The blade is engraved with floral motifs and King George III Royal cypher below a crown. The obverse is engraved with floral motifs, trophies of arms and the Royal coat of arms and motto bracketed with crescent moons. The spine is maker marked.” The text of the spine has hand engraved makers marked “J.J. Runkel Solingen”. Johann Justus Runkel was a German who moved to England in 1779. Runkel was a prolific importer of high-quality Solingen made swords and blades between 1780 and his death in 1808. The total length of the Saber is 38.6 inches. This sword has the early pattern broad stepped knuckle bow and Saddle guard. The knuckle bow and pommel are not decorated as is the sheath-guard wings. There is some very slight movement in the hilt. There is also damage to the knuckle guard, right where the sword knot would go and the guard has cleanly broken and should be a easy fix for a metal worker who specializes in welding. The twisted brass wire on the grip is original as is the black leather around the wood grip and is in fine condition. Besides the clean break in the knuckle guard, this late 18th Century Cavalry Saber is in very good condition and is a great, early example of this brand of Horseman officer’s swords. *Please note all images to assess condition before bidding.
