Description: This is a Heuer Model 3000 Reference Number 137.406 with 3 Registers Chronograph with DATE Window. It has the LWO 283 Automatic movement. My Heuer # 17. My eBay item # 381. In 1964 Heuer and Leonidas merge to form HEUER-LEONIDAS, S.A. In 1985 Heuer was sold by Lemania (now the controlling stockholder) to the TAG group forming TAG-Heuer. This Chronograph was introduced by HEUER between 1983 and 1984. This Heuer 3000 Chronograph is mint condition. It is not new but as near perfect condition as can be without coming directly from the factory. This watch is on the same design as the Royal Oak watches. This is a black tie and tuxedo dress chronograph. VALUE: I have this watch priced at $7500.00, but the actual value of this Extremely Rare Heuer in like New Unused Condition with original box & papers is $10,000.00. This Heuer Chronograph is over 35 years old. A rare watch collector's piece. DESCRIPTION: Dial: Beautiful mint condition GOLD dial with raised GOLD indice with luminous inserts at the 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12 hour markers. Has an interior GOLD second counter ring with black markers located on outer rim of the dial. Located at the 3 o'clock position is the magnified DATE WINDOW. Date Window has magnification on inside of crystal not outside. At the 6 o'clock position is the 12 HOUR register. At the 9 o'clock position is the 30 MINUTE register. At the 12 o'clock position is the CONTINIOUS SECOND register. The hour and minute hands are GOLD luminous filling. The second hand is BLACK. The register hands are all black. The dial is signed in BLACK with the famous "HEUER" logo shield. It is also signed in BLACK, "3000", "AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH" and "200 METERS". Crystal: The crystal is mineral and in excellent condition with no scratches. Movement: The movement is the LWO 283 AUTOMATIC. This is a 40 jewel movement. The movement is signed "LWO 283 FORTY JEWEL UNADJUSTED SWISS". This is a very high quality movement which keeps perfect time and all chronograph functions operate correctly. HISTORY: The LWO283 is a separate module type chronograph movement which was originally released in May 1983 on the Heuer 2000. This was a collaboration between Lemania and Dubois Depraz starting in 1979. The Dubois Depraz calls the monumental chronograph module "DD2000". The LWO 283 basically consist of the ETA 2892 as the engine, the DD2000 as the chronograph module. Heuer had an exclusive contract with Lemania and Dubois Depraz called the "collaboration triangulaire" to use the LWO283. After Heuer was sold to TAG in 1985, TAG-Heuer dissolved the "collaboration triangulaire" and Lemania sold the LWO283 to other watch manufactures. The Heuer 3000 was a short production run and makes it a fairly rare collector’s chronograph. At most it would be a 2 year production with the HEUER only trademark logo. This is considered rare for any production chronograph. Case: The case is stainless steel with Gold Plated finish. The stainless steel case back is screw on/off. The interior case back is signed with the famous "HEUER" shield logo. It is also signed "SWISS SINCE 1860", "SWISS MADE . WATERRESISTANT 200 METERS TESTED . STAINLESS STEEL". It also has the case reference number of 137.406. Crown & Pushers: The crown and pushers are original to this chronograph and are in perfect condition. The pushers function perfectly as does the crown. The crown is signed with the famous "HEUER" shield logo. The pushers and the crown are GOLD plated with 100 percent finish remaining. The crown on these models do no screw in or out. First pull out on crown is for no function. Second pull out is for setting the date and the third pull out is to set the time. Full push in for waterproof setting. Bezel: The bezel is BLACK and has 12 sides with a GOLD bead on each one of the sides. The bezel is in mint condition with no scratches, flaking, chipping or wear. This bezel style in similar to the Royal Oak watches. Bracelet: The bracelet is GOLD plated finish that is in mint condition with no scratches. The bracelet is signed on the clasp with the famous "HEUER" logo shield. This is a diver’s bracelet with the wet suit extension. The bracelet has 22 links and the clasp is adjustable. Comes with 3 extra links. Accessories: Original TAG-Heuer Box (sold after TAG purchased Heuer-Leondias from Lemania), original TAG-Heuer Instruction pamplet for the 2000 quarts (incorrect pamphlet) and the original TAG-Heuer International Guarantee book with the correct model number (137.406) showing that it was purchased from Watches of Switzerland in Hong Kong (which is still in existence and an authorized TAG dealer dba Chinachem 77 Mody Road, Tsimshatsui East, Kowloon, Hong Kong). Once Lemania sold Heuer to TAG is was the practice to use all existing Heuer signed parts on TAG-Heuer watches and vice-versa, using new boxes and literature with TAG-Heuer on it with Heuer watches and chronographs. This is a transition chronograph of Heuer-Leondias to TAG-Heuer. Using all Heuer parts & movements but TAG-Heuer boxes/packaging & literature. PAYMENT: Payment can be made by any method approved by eBay.SHIPPING: Shipping within the USA is free and fully insured. International sales & shipping by eBay Global Shipping Program. HISTORY ON LWO 283 MOVEMENT: Both the quartz and automatic chronographs use the Dubois Depraz 2000 chronograph module. The Automatic movement (LWO 283) mates the DD2000 module to the ETA 2892 base, while the quartz movement (Calibre 185) uses a ESA 555.XXX (also known as the ETA 955.XXX) tractor. the Dubois Depraz 2000 module was the result of a partnership between Lemania and Dubois Depraz that began in the late 1970s. Because Heuer contributed to the funding of the project, the LWO 283 was initially exclusive to Heuer, but when Lemania sold its shares in Heuer in 1984 to TAG, the use of the movement became more widespread. Lemania sold the movement as the Lemania 283 to several high-end clients such as Audemars Piguet in their Royal Oak Offshore, Girard Perregaux (7000 Chronograph) and Baume et Mercier. The Dubois-Depraz chronograph module is used by a number of watch manufacturers in their "high end" products. It is utilized by among others, Audermars Piguet in their Royal Oak Offshore, Glashtte Chronograph and Girard Perregaux in their 7000 Chronograph and by Baume-et-Mercier in their Classic Chronographs. Baume-et-Mercier refer to the movement both as a Lemania 283 and a B&M caliber 13283. The 30mm diametre of the movement has been widened from the standard 2892s 25,6 mm, so it is the exact same size as the Valjoux 7750. When introduced to the market, this caliber was marketed as a Lemania 283 A movement, the only movement Lemania ever marketed without producing it themselves. It is now formally a Dubois-Depraz caliber, and marketed as such. The Lemania 283 movement has the following technical specifications;- Friction Protection: 40 Jewels, Power reserve: 42 hours, Diameter: 30.00mm, Thickness: 6.50mm. Because the base ETA 2892 movement (which is recognised for it's accuracy and durability), operating at 28,800 pulsations/hour is using a Glucodur quality balance and an Nivarox #1 Hairspring the end result is one of the most reliable automatic movements on the market. One of the unusual things about the Lemania movement is that the date optic is part of the movement. It magnifies the date without the need for an unsightly bulge on the crystal or the distortion of the underside crystal optics. The 40 jewel Lemania 283. This movement is based on an ETA 2892 with a Dubois Depraz Chronograph module which was developed by Dubois Depraz for Audemars Piguet. The same Lemania movement is used in chronographs, like the Girard Perregaux 280 and the Paul Picot Chronograph. The Dubois Depraz chronograph module is used in the Audermars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore and Glashtte Chronograph. The difference being that to acquire those models you would need to spend anywhere from $7000 to $20,000. It has been said that module-type chronograph calibres have some disadvantages against movements where the chronograph mechanics are fully integrated. It seems that they require a lot more disassembling when being repaired. MORE HISTORY ON THE HEUER MODEL 3000 CHRONOGRAPH RE. 137406: The following information was taken from the Calibre 11 website. Not surprisingly, the last Heuer catalogue released in 1984 is a mix between the classic Heuer models appearing for the last time and the new generation models that would form the backbone of the TAG Heuer range through the 1980s. Alongside the Chronomatic-powered watches (such as the Autavia, Skipper, Monza and Calculator) and Lemania 5100 watches (Carrera, Cortina and Silverstone) was an expansive range of diver watches- the 1000 and 2000 Series. Joining this range of diver watches for the first time in 1984 was a new premium range of watches- the 3000 Series. As the unimaginative name suggests, the watch was positioned above the 1000 and 2000 series, even though it shared many of the same “six features“. Given the parlous state of the Swiss watchmaking industry in the early 1980s, it made sense to eek out as many model variants as possible using as few unique parts as possible. However while the 1000 and 2000 series were extremely popular, lasting several decades, the 3000 was only on sale for just over 5 years and underwent only minor changes throughout its life. While not at the top of many collectors’ wish lists, the 3000 is still an interesting chapter in TAG Heuer’s struggle out of the 1980s. The 3000 design is essentially a development of the successful 2000-series launched in 1982. Where the 2000 had a smooth, rounded case, the 3000 squared those curves away to create a more technical looking watch. Complementing the angular case was a huge 12-sided bezel that sat inside the width of the watch. While not as wide as the case itself, the bezel was very thick, as you can see below. While it’s the bezel that gives this watch its character, it’s also in my view the weakest part of the overall look and the single element that firmly places the design in the 1980s. The Bezel also features small ball-shaped grips at each corner to make it easier to turn. One of the other design features of the watch was the cyclops over the date window at 3 o’clock. Unlike most Cyclops that sit on top of the crystal, this one sits under the crystal. The pushers used on the 3000 are different to both the 1000 and 2000 series, and have a similar design to the ones used on the Chronomatic watches of the 1970s. The 3000 resorted to small design tricks to give a feeling of “premium-ness” over the other dive watches in the Heuer range. Metal borders were used on each of the hour-markers, as well as on the date window and the sub-dials of the Chronograph. Efforts were also made with the bracelet, several models having polished centre links to contrast with the brushed finish of the outer-links. The Chronograph shared the same basic design of the watch, the only real difference being the use of baguette-shaped hour-markers instead of the circles used on the watch. The 3000 used the same family of movements as the 2000 Series, with the majority of the watch range using the relatively common ESA 555. 112/ ETA 955.112 quartz movement. The Chronograph movements, however, are far more interesting because both the quartz and automatic chronograph use the Dubois Depraz 2000 chronograph module. The Automatic movement (LWO 283) mates the DD2000 module to the ETA 2892 base while the quartz movement (Calibre 185) uses the same Quartz base as the watch. TAG HEUER 3000: The series carried on largely unchanged as a TAG Heuer. Apart from the obvious TAG Heuer logo, the only change to the dial was the “3000” script moving from just below the Heuer shield to the bottom half of the dial. Somewhere between 1986 and 1989 the 3000 Chronograph was dropped, leaving only the basic watch. This was around the time that TAG Heuer was phasing out its use of the Dubois Depraz movements, so I suspect that the view was the sales of the Chronograph did not call for going to the trouble of fitting a new movement.
