Description: Henry Ward Beecher - Norwood; or Village Life in New England; Charles Scribner & Co. New York; 1868. First Edition. printed by Trow and Smith Book Mfg. Originally appeared in 1840-65 as a series of sketches in the New York Ledger. Two later editions appeared 1887 and 1895. This edition includes pages of Scribner adverts and a blurb about the New York Ledger. A generally fine copy of this book. While there is fading to spine the gilt blind stamp on spine is still clear. pages are clean with little foxing, binding is still good (rare for this volume). Tan boards with blind stamped double borders front and back. Slight loss fabric to top spine. Less a novel than a sprawling series of observations on 19th C America by the most popular and followed preacher in the country at that time. Part of the book covers the period leading up to the Civil War and the war years. Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe (Uncle Tom's Cabin), was an influential abolitionist, women's suffragist, temperance leader, and defender of Darwin's theory or evolution, which he felt was not incompatible with the Bible. Beecher's focus on Christ's love has influenced Christian thought to the present day. Beecher was so influential a speaker that Lincoln sent him to Europe to champion the Union cause, turning European sentiment against the Confederate States. A genuine oddity of American literature.
