HENRY MORGENTHAU SR. - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 03/11/1919 CO-SIGNED BY: EDWARD A. FILENE - HFSID 23429 HENRY MORGENTHAU, SR and EDWARD FILENE Two millionaire philanthropists prepare for trips to Europe in 1919. Typed Letter signed: "H Morgenthau", 1p, 6x9ΒΌ. New York, N.Y., 1919 March 11. Ink note in lower margin in hand of Edward Filene: "Silk underwear & [ 1 word illegible]". On personal letterhead to Edward "A" Filene, Boston, Massachusetts. [Middle initial handwritten by Morgenthau.] Additional pencil notations (unknown hand) and receipt stamp. In full: "It may surprise you somewhat to learn that I am going to Europe ahead of you. I am leaving on the LEVIATHAN on Saturday of this week. Mr. Harry Davison has cabled me to come over to help him out at the conference at Cannes about the internationalization of the Red Cross. There is a probability that we may meet. At first I had really thought of sailing on the ADRIATIC. It would have been a pleasant surprise for both of us to have been on the same steamer. With kindest regards, Sincerely". German-born businessman and diplomat HENRY MORGENTHAU, SR. (1856-1946) is best known for being the U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during the Armenian Genocide. Morgenthau, who had made a fortune in real estate, was a large contributor to Woodrow Wilson's presidential campaign in 1912, and he was named financial chairman of the Democratic Party in 1912 and again in 1916. Morgenthau, who had hoped for a Cabinet post, was instead appointed as U.S. Ambassador (1913-1916). After the outbreak of WWI, the American embassy also represented many of the Allies in Constantinople. At the end of the war, Morgenthau attended the Paris Peace Conference and later worked with war-related charitable bodies, including the American Red Cross. He published several books, including Ambassador Morgenthau's Story (1919), which detailed the Armenian Genocide, Secrets of the Bosphorus (1918) and I Was Sent to Athens (1929), memoirs of his time working with Greek refugees. Morgenthau's son, Henry, Jr. (1891-1967) served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1934-1945). EDWARD FILENE (1860-1937) introduced the first "off-price" retailing as President of William Filene's Sons, a Boston dry goods store founded by his father. In 1891, he moved slow-selling goods to the basement, first discounting them by 25% and then taking systematic reductions. Filene's Basement, which operated at a loss for the first ten years, went on to become one of the most profitable operations in retail history. Like his friend Morgenthau, Filene was an advocate of progressive policies. He supported the League of Nations, workmen's compensation laws, credit unions and the 40-hour week. Filene's notation about silk underwear is intriguing. Did the department store magnate send Morgenthau a gift? Light crease and staple holes in upper left. Otherwise, fine condition.
