Description: Vintage hardcover edition of The Bostonians, by Henry James (Modern Library, 1956). Originally published in 1886, in the middle period of James's literary career, The Bostonians is the story of Verena Tennant, a young feminist living in Boston, who is pursued by the two other main characters in the book, Basil Ransom, a conservative lawyer, and Olive Chancellor, Ransom's cousin and a leader in the feminist movement. Though the novel was originally considered a failure, its reputation has improved significantly over the past 135 years. In 1984, the book was adapted into a film starring Christopher Reeve, Vanessa Redgrave, and Madeleine Potter. This book is in very good condition, with an intact dustcover and no rips, tears, marks, or other major signs of wear. A very attractive early Modern Library edition!
