Female cats who are not spayed have an increased risk of developing all types of Cancer as she ages, especially if she is an indoor house cat. A feral cat living outside who is able to nurse her kitten litters for at least 8 weeks, offers a protective factor in her not developing Cancer. Her kittens also receive immune support through the mom cats milk. However, it is when a nursing mom's kittens are prevented from nursing that both the health of the mother cat and that of the kittens suffer over the long term. Mother's milk supports the kittens developing immune system and supports uterine health of the nursing mom cat. We promote trapping the mom and her kittens and allowing them to stay together a minimum of 8 weeks. It is common these days for people to simply let their unwanted house cats outside thinking they will care for themselves. This is not true! House cats intentionally placed outdoors have not developed the survival skills necessary to live outside. A house cat my run outside because a door was left open or it sees a cute bird wanting to chase it, then becomes lost. Sometimes a cat develops unwanted behaviors because they weren't spayed or neutered so people let their cat out and guess what happens? The female becomes pregnant and the male locates every fertile female in the neighborhood! Then, more kittens! Some of the cats in this colony were once someone's beloved pet who was betrayed and left outside. These special kitties were fortunate to form this colony yet every once in awhile another new cat comes to visit, or is dumped by others knowing these cats are well cared for, then stays.
