Description: HELL WOULDN'T STOP: An Oral History of the Battle of Wake Island by Chet Cunningham. NEW First Edition stated remainder copy paperback, 2002. A gritty, often disturbing oral chronicle of one of the first and most tragic military engagements in World War II. For the author's older brother Kenneth, a Marine private in the defense battalion stationed on Wake Island, World War II began on December 8, 1941, just 5 hours after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It ended on December 23. With their 12 Wildcat fighter planes lost and their forces diminished, the Marines that day on Wake Island faced an overwhelming Japanese invasion. Private Cunningham and his fellow Marines fought on for 16 days, until their commanding officers ordered them to surrender. Taken prisoner, the Marines were stripped naked, and with their hands bound, were forced to sit naked in the hot sun all day and in the cold all night. Jammed in the holds of ships, they were taken to prison camps in China and Japan. When finally liberated 44 months later, they returned home unheralded and largely forgotten. Their often horrific, frequently heroic story now stands recorded, for the most part in the words of the soldiers, sailors, Marines, and civilian personnel who were there, as well as of their wives and widows, in startling, unforgettable detail. NEW First Edition stated remainder copy paperback, unread with pages clean and unmarked. Edges show light soiling at bottom, along with a thin black remained line. All other edges clean. Binding tight with spine not creased. Cover shows minor corner bumps, no edge wear, no tears, and minor scuffing and rubbing. 5.75" x 8.75." Maps, vintage photos, appendix, and text. Appendix includes complete list of military defenders of Wake Island, the KIAs as well as the survivors. 283 pgs.
