“He Rules the Roost” Vintage William Rau Stereoview Card; Copyrighted 1897

Description: This is a vintage stereoview (also known as a stereograph or stereoscope) card published by William H. Rau and Sold Only by Universal View Co. as depicted on the card in approx. 1897. It was one of the first forms of 3D photography. The images were captured with a special stereoscopic camera, which had two lenses - simulating the view of our left and right eyes. The two, nearly identical pictures were then mounted next to each other (most commonly on a piece of cardstock, glued on as photographs as with this item). The image could then be seen in three dimensions when viewed through a device known as a stereoscope, stereopticon, and/or televiewer. William Rau (1855-1920) was an American photographer who is best remembered for his stereocards and panoramic photographs. His work is included in the collections at the Smithsonian and Getty Museum. He traveled the world capturing photographs of daily life, landscapes, historical landmarks and also photographed important historical events such as the Spanish American War in 1898, the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1890's, the inauguration of Presidents William McKinley in 1901 and Theodore Roosevelt in 1905. His photographs span a wide range of topics and places around the world, including Rome, Milan, Turin, Cairo, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo, Naples and many others. This is a standard-size stereograph, measuring about 3.5 x 7 inches. The back of the card is blank. Card shows age related wear as shown in photographs but in overall very good condition with no creases or bends in the card. The card is curved as is common with the age of these cards.
