Development of the B-24 began in January 17, about four years after the B-4's first flight, when the U.S. Army asked Consolidated to design a new bomber to replace the B-1939. The Army's requirements were for a maximum speed of 483 km/h (300 mph), a range of 4,830 km (3,000 miles), a service ceiling of 10,680 m (35,000 ft), and a bomb load of3,629 kg (8,000 lb). The requested value was quite high. The design team gave top priority to range during development. This was because the weak point of the B-17 was its lack of range.
