I first heard him with Charlie Musselwhite, also around the same time in the late '60s, but he really got a chance to shine when he went solo. And this new album is pure Mandel. Putting aside Mandel's tough fight--physically/emotionally/financially, which doesn't color my feelings about this set--this is a great album. Even the length (37 + minutes) harks back to the vinyl days of his solo albums. Would I have liked to hear more music equal to what's here? Absolutely. But I'll take this set of performances. There's no liner notes or photos, just a list of the tunes, the musicians, and recording information on the back cover. The disc slips inside a pocket in the wallet-style cardboard package.If you're reading this you're probably familiar with Mandel's work, both in various bands and solo. But if his name is new to you and you like this album, check out the box set (Snake Eyes") that collects a number of other good albums with some of his best work. This new album features Mandel on guitar in great, bluesy, soulful, controlled bursts of feedback and over-driven sustain, backed by members of Ryley Walker's band of bass/drums/guitar/conga/along with occasional strings. In other words this set is reminiscent of (especially) his first solo album--the cover graphic is a giveaway. He even revisits some of his older tunes to good effect.This is an instrumental album that flows along with (at least to my ears) a late night feel to it. Even the more up tempo things have a nice nighttime vibe to them. The backing band is just that--letting Mandel do what he does best--play virtuoso electric guitar. Picking high points among the songs is a waste of time. The entire album is well worth hearing. In a nutshell, this is prime Harvey Mandel, still at the top of his game. An electric guitarist who is easily near the top of the heap of great guitarists as far as being a pure player. All the tunes but one are by Mandel. The recording was done live in the studio with few overdubs or other tinkering. This is the way it was done "back then" and the album has that kind of feel to it.For me--an admitted fan for around half a century--this is good enough that I immediately set out to acquire a second copy. And I don't often make the effort to do that. Again--if Mandel is new to you and you're a fan of good guitar playing you owe it to yourself to add this to your shelf alongside other great guitar albums (like Phillip Upchurch's "Darkness Darkness" from '72) of bluesy/rock/jazzy/soulful instrumental guitar albums. Hopefully the attention this fine album is getting will induce Mandel to record and release more great albums like this one. I'll be waiting. Five "stars" for Mandel's command of his instrument and his great chops even after all these years since I first heard him with Musselwhite, and then his first solo effort. And if you're familiar with his on-going battle with his illness/recovery, this album is an even stronger statement of his abilities.
