Sales of the sauce are credited with helping Heublein survive through Prohibition.1939 — Heublein president John Martin buys the rights to make Smirnoff vodka from a Russian emigre for $14,000. The company goes on to find ways to get Americans to drink the clear liquor, including creating drinks such as the Bloody Mary.
