Description: Description Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt Edition Volume 2 Australian Eloquence 15 CD Box SetProduct introduction A 15-CD box set, the first compilation of recordings by the German master conductor for Philips, Mercury, DG and others. Following on from the complete Decca recordings in series Vol.1, this is a collection of recordings by German conductor Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt (1900-1973) for Philips, Mercury, Deutsche Grammophon and Acord. A 15-CD box set. Limited edition. Includes recordings from 1944 (with Heinrich Sutermeister) to his last recording, Mozart (the opera "The Flowers of Love") in 1972. Mozart was the composer that this conductor admired more than anyone else. "We are such close friends... I can't even explain what I feel when I listen to his music. It makes my eyes water and takes my breath away... At the end of my life I want to be completely immersed in Mozart's music," Schmidt-Isserstedt said. Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt became known to many record fans in the 1970s for his recordings of Beethoven's symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic. After recording in pre-war Germany and holding important positions such as conductorship at the Berlin and Hamburg opera houses, his career entered a new phase after 1945 as founder and conductor of the Hamburg North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, now known as the NDR Elbphilharmonie. Their performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade is dynamic and superbly prepared. It is rare to hear them perform the complete Brahms Hungarian Dances, and this is one of the pleasures of this set. The highly acclaimed Beethoven Piano Concerto Cycle with the Vienna Philharmonic, performed with Wilhelm Backhaus, proved Schmidt-Isserstedt what an accommodating accompanist he was. In this set he likewise provides attentive support to Monique Haas in Ravel, Alfred Brendel in Brahms, Wolfgang Schneiderhan in Mozart and Henryk Szeryng in Beethoven. His international reputation, along with that of the NDR Symphony Orchestra, led to invitations from the great orchestras of Europe. He was Principal Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra from 1955 to 1964, with whom he recorded Berwald's Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3 in 1962. Schmidt-Isserstedt gave many premieres of new works, especially in England and Germany. Wolfgang Fortner's The Creation is a lively 17-minute piece set to words by the American poet James Weldon Johnson. A modern rendition of The Creation, Schmidt-Isserstedt accompanies Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau with the NDR Symphony Orchestra. His final recording before his death from a heart attack in 1973 was the German version of Mozart's opera The Flower Gardener, Love's Flowers, assembled by Philips with an all-star cast including Jessye Norman, Hermann Prey and Tatjana Troyanos. The set includes the earliest recordings from the 1940s, never before released or released on CD. Original jacket. Original couplings. New essay by Peter Quantrill about Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt and his career. *Please note that even among products claiming to be complete recordings, audio may occasionally be missing.Work information Conductor: Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt Conductor: Walter Susskind Orchestra: London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Contents Number of components | 15 pieces Track Listing CD 1 BEETHOVEN: Violin Concerto; Violin Romance No. 2 Henryk Szeryng London Symphony Orchestra CD 2 BRAHMS: Piano Concerto No. 1 Alfred Brendel Concertgebouworkest CD 3–5 MOZART: Die Gärtnerin aus Liebe Ileana Cotrubas; Helen Donath; Jessye Norman; Tatiana Troyanos; Werner Hollweg; Gerhard Unger; Hermann Prey NDR-Sinfonieorchester CD 6 MOZART: Symphonies Nos. 39 & 41 London Symphony Orchestra CD 7 SCHUBERT: Symphonies Nos. 6 & 4 London Symphony Orchestra Walter Süsskind (No. 4) CD 8 BRAHMS: 21 Hungarian Dances NDR-Sinfonieorchester CD 9 RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: Scheherazade NDR-Sinfonieorchester CD 10 BERWALD: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3 Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra CD 11 MOZART: Violin Concertos Nos. 4 & 5 Wolfgang Schneiderhan Berliner Philharmoniker (No. 4) NDR-Sinfonieorchester (No. 5) CD 12 FORTNER: The Creation Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau FORTNER: Mouvements Carl Seeman RAVEL: Piano Concerto in G major Monique Haas NDR-Sinfonieorchester CD 13 VERDI: La traviata (highlights) Maria Stader; Ernst Haefliger; Lawrence Winters NDR-Sinfonieorchester FIRST RELEASE ON CD CD 14 DVOŘÁK Serenade for Strings; Serenade for Winds NDR-Sinfonieorchester CD 15 HISTORICAL RECORDINGS MOZART Symphony No. 38 ‘Prague’* MOZART Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro – arias° Lore Hoffmann TCHAIKOVSKY Serenade for Strings* NDR-Sinfonieorchester SUTERMEISTER Romeo und Julia (excerpts)* Christel Goltz; Julius Katona Orchester des Deutschen Opernhauses, Berlin *FIRST RELEASE ON CD °PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED Shipping We will select and ship from Fedex, DHL, Japan Post.Additional shipping charges may be incurred if otherwise specified. Please be sure to contact us before ordering. We will aim to dispatch all orders within 5 days of confirmed payment.
