Description: Found at an estate sale, this charming vintage 5.75” x 6.6” framed aquatint etching on silk by noted Austrian artist Hans Figura (1898-1978) shows a village church beside a stream in a tranquil winter landscape. It’s signed in pencil in the bottom margin. It's matted and framed under non-reflective glass in an attractive 12.6” x 13.2” wood frame. The mat opening is 6.2” x 6.6” and the image area is 5.75” x 6.6”. The second photo shows a 12” ruler for scale. As is unfortunately all too often the case at estate sales, I wasn't able to learn anything about the age or history of this exquisitely detailed etching, which I would guess to date from the 1950’s or 1960’s. A label on the back indicates that it was framed in Naples, Italy. Over the years the bottom of the mat has acquired some moisture stains, as shown by a detail photo. I personally find these stains inconspicuous but an over-mat could be added if desired. One photo shows a detail of this etching as viewed through a 10X loupe. Hans Figura (1898-1978) was a noted Austrian painter and etcher who is well-known for his aquatint etchings on paper or silk of European and American landscape and cityscape scenes like this one and also for his paintings. Born in Vienna, he was acclaimed as one of the outstanding European colorists in his field. He was a student of Luigi Kasimir, from whom he learned color printing and the art of etching and aquatint. I understand he maintained studios in Vienna and New York in the 1930's. He reportedly also exhibited in Paris, London, and Berlin. Over the decades the frame has acquired some minor wear and the plastic tape used to seal the back is peeling off (see photos). This framed picture weighs 2 lbs. 3 oz., making it easy to hang.
