Almost sketch-like, fast painting of a courtesan – or oiran – seen on the back, walking with her kamuro, a young girl in training who waits on oiran. The painting is done in mostly black ink with dashes of bright red, yellow, blue and green mineral colors. On the left an inscription by Santo Kyozan (1769-1816), signed by him and with his seal. He was the younger brother of the famous Edo artist Santo Kyoden. Painting signed Gyokushin? and with red artist seal. Not identified. Japan, early 19th century. Painting: H 41 x W 10.25 in.
