Description: Up for auction is this very nice Haffner Century of Progress train set made in 1933. This set was sold during the Century of Progress World’s Fair which was held in Chicago, Illinois in 1933 and likely in 1934. Included in this set is a locomotive, tender, baggage car, coach, and observation car as well as track and original box. On the side of the box is stamped 13170 and, more faintly, the National Recovery Act (NRA) logo stamp with the American Eagle. DETAIL DESCRIPTION The number 1110 locomotive is constructed of tinplated metal and painted black except for the red painted housing around the boiler front. It features a clockwork motor with a brake and a mechanically track actuated bell. It also includes provision for small battery to power it's electric light bulb in the front of the boiler (bulb missing). There is a lever in the cab that controls the electric battery operated light and another lever for the brake. This locomotive appears not to work, although can be turned with its original key. The condition of the locomotive is generally Very Good plus (C-6+) with some wear on the paint along the top edges of the cab roof. The tender is # 1190 tender has four wheels, red painted tinplate body and black painted simulated coal pile. Its condition is Excellent (C-7). The baggage car has four wheels, tinplated metal construction, has a red painted frame, red painted roof, and red painted ends. Each side is lithographed in light yellow and is lettered “OVERLAND FLYER” in red across the top and “EXPRESS BAGGAGE” and “HAFNER OVERLAND FLYER RAILWAYS” Herald in Red to the left while lettered in red “UNITED STATES MAIL” to the right. This baggage car grades Excellent (C-7). The coach has four wheels, template construction, with a red roof, red frame, and red ends. The sides are lithographed in light yellow with OVERLAND FLYER” lettered in Red along the top. On the bottom of each side is the Haffner herald lettered in red and “HAFNER OVERLAND FLYER RAILWAYS”. The overall condition of this Overland Flyer coach is Excellent (C-7). The last car in the train set is an observation car also made of lithographed template. Its roof, frame, and the observation balcony end are painted in red. Each side is light yellow with OVERLAND FLYER” lettered in Red along the top. On the bottom of each side is the Haffner herald lettered in red and “HAFNER OVERLAND FLYER RAILWAYS”. This car has an extra feature in the it's equipped with an electric light fixture and an opening on one end for controlling the light and containing the batteries. The light bulb appears to be missing. This car's grades Vert Good (C-6) with a few scratches on one side and a few scratches and light oxidation on one spot of the roof. Included with the set is a crossing, six pieces of large curved track, two pieces of short curved track and four pieces of straight track. The original key is also included. As mentioned before, the original box is included and stamped as earlier stated on one end. It has some damage to one corner of the box top and some missing lettering. This box grades Fair (C-4) owing to its condition. This set appears complete and original as far as I can determine. It is a very popular Haffner train set not only for Hafner collectors but also for Century of Progress collectors.
