Print Description Take My Hand color_lens Take my hand and follow me, There are things ahead for you to see. Little wonders are all around, And tender mercies to be found. We’ll take our time, no need to run, Breathe deep the air and feel the sun. The grass is soft beneath our feet, Sounds are soothing, the air is sweet. Sometimes we’ll stop and just be still, Our hearts will tell us God is real! Small graces along our path appear, They let us know that Heaven’s near. So take my hand anew each day, The walk is lovely and I know the way. -- Greg Olsen - 2008 "Take My Hand is about enjoying the journey. How often did Jesus admonish us to "become as a little child" in order to "enter the Kingdom of Heaven" (John 18:3-4). Many of those heavenly blessings can be experienced here and now as we emulate the qualities inherent in little children. I used our oldest grandson, Zac, as a model for this piece. Zac’s enjoyment of life is typical of that exhibited by so many children. They are endlessly curious, they don’t worry about tomorrow and they find joy in simplest of things. They also seem to be just a little more in touch with Heaven than those of us who’ve already been around the block a few times. "Taking His Hand" means letting ourselves be more like those little children and trusting that the Lord knows the path that is designed especially for us."-- Greg Olsen Artist Biography About the Artist color_lens The art of Greg Olsen illuminates the soul and spirit of its subjects and uplifts the hearts and minds of its viewers. Olsen's diverse interests are deftly demonstrated in oil paintings that range from the realistic and historical to the whimsical. His luminous, delicate portraits capture not only his subjects' likeness, but their spirit as well. Landscapes of scenes from America and the world over reflect the perfect beauty of the mind's eye. As a child, Olsen often relied on his imagination for entertainment — as an adult, his imagination entertains us with paintings that depict the best and brightest memories of childhood. Greg Olsen's biblical paintings, represented in religious temples in more than 20 countries around the world, and his work for the Pentagon and the National Collegiate Athletic Association required intensive research and strict attention to factual detail. While these historical paintings satisfy his desire to render works with a sense of permanence, his whimsical paintings afford him the freedom to transfer his imagination to canvas. When Olsen paints a tree house, he paints it the way children climbing it imagine it to be — the simple boards and nails of reality become elaborate, majestic castles in the sky. Olsen's paintings are included in many corporate collections, including Mobil Corporation, Turner Broadcasting System, Westin Hotels, World Explorer Cruises, the American Cancer Society, the Pentagon, the U.S. Forest Service, and the state of Idaho. His works have been exhibited in prominent art galleries throughout the West and major one-man shows. Greg Olsen's philosophy on art is quite simple: "For me, I just always appreciated the beauty of art and the way it made me feel," he says. "Art's greatest purpose is just to make us happy. I take a lot of pleasure in painting and hope that pleasure is contagious to those who look at my art." Greg Olsen was born in 1958 in Idaho Falls, Idaho and grew up in the nearby farming community of Iona. He is the oldest of five children. Greg was blessed with very supportive parents who always encouraged him and provided opportunities for him to pursue his passion of art. Greg remembers a time as a teenager when he had been hired to paint a large sign for a local grocery store. It was wintertime and too cold to paint in the garage so his parents let him set up a workshop in his bedroom. He promptly spilled two quarts of black and orange enamel paint all over his bedroom carpet. Amazingly, his parents still encouraged him in his artistic endeavors. Greg began showing an interest in art when he was in about the 4th or 5th grade. He asked for a John Nagey art set for Christmas, which came with detailed instructions about values, shading, perspective, etc. It also came with a plentiful supply of paper and different shades of black, grey and white chalk, along with colored pencils. Greg seemed to enjoy practicing with these and received encouragement from his school teacher as well as at home. By the time Greg reached Jr. high School he began to take it quite seriously, and when he entered Bonneville High School he was fortunate to have an extremely good art teacher, who perhaps, contributed more to Greg’s art education and desire to make it his life’s work than any other person. After high school, Greg attended Utah State University where he studied illustration, While attending school he met his wife, Sydnie Cazier. After college, Greg was hired as an in-house illustrator in Salt Lake City, working on anything from murals and dioramas to simple paste-up. Two years later, he followed a friend's advice and began painting full time. Sales from his first show only just covered the cost of refreshments and invitations, but yielded the first of many commissions that were to come. They have six children and are enjoying their new role as grandparents. Greg likes being close to his family. He paints in his studio, 37 steps from the back door of their home.
