J. Hill's Railroads. He later acquired Northern Pacific, and the Burlington. The railroad started in 1857 as the Minnesota and Pacific Railroad Company. Hill saw an opportunity here and persuaded three partto purchase the road from rival Northern Pacific. George Stephen, president of Bank of Montreal; Donald Smith, chief commissioner of Hudson Bay Company, also built Canadian Pacific Railroad a few years later. Norman Kittson was Hill's partner in the Red River Transportation Company. The purchase price was a remarkable $280,000, one fifth of its actual value. THE NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD The Northern Pacific Railroad was another road that was acquired by James J. Hill, in his desire to control the routes to the Pacific. It was the first transcontinental railroad. President Lincoln signed legisthat established the Northern Pacific Railroad Company, with an Eastern Terminus at Lake Superior, and a Western Terminus at Puget Sound, Washington State. The railroad followed the trail of the Lewis and Clark expedition, which had opened up the Northwest to the Pacific Ocean. The road was started in Duluth, Minnesota in 1870. The Golden Spike was driven at Gold Creek, Montana, on October 5, 1911. All pictures are of the actual item.
