Grave Digger was formed in 1980 by Chris Boltendaal (vo) and others in North Rhine=Westphalia, Germany. With their debut album "Heavy Metal Breakdown" (1984), they attracted attention by developing power metal that seemed to be influenced by NWOBHM, but after releasing three albums, they changed their name to Digger due to the intention of the record company, which decided that the band name Grave Digger would not sell. They released their fourth album, Stronger Than Ever (1986), which introduced a new catchy twist, but caused fans to leave, and the band disbanded in 1987. Four years later, however, Chris reunited Grave Digger with a new member and released their fifth album, The Reaper (1993). After making a comeback with aggressive power metal, he began to produce concept-style albums with his seventh album, Tunes of War (1996), and with his eighth album, Knights of the Cross (1998), he brought in keyboardist Hans-Peter Katzenberg (keys) to show off his style with a touch of mysticism. After that, they continued to release albums at a pace of one every 1~2 years, such as "Ballad of a Hangman" (2009), the only album released as a twin guitar system with former Rage member Manni Schmidt (g), and "Clans Will Rise Again" (2010), which was the 30th anniversary album of their formation.
