Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) GORDON HIGHLANDERS MAKING KILTS. This view, representing the tailors of the regiment making kilts for the Gordon Highlanders, is taken in the barrack-yard at Aberdeen. The regiment is now composed of the amalgamated battalions of the old 75th and 92nd Regiments, the first of which was raised in 1787 for Indian service; kilts being afterwards abandoned from 1818 till 1881, when amalgamation with the Gordons restored the national costume. The other battalion, the original "Gordons," was formed in 1794, under the command of the Marquis of Huntly, whose fair mother, the beautiful Duchess of Gordon, is reported to have given the bounty-money to many a Highlander from between her lips. Besides the Gordon tartan, the regiment wears the crest of the Marquis of Huntly.
