Godey (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches tall hardcover, marbled paper-covered boards over leather spine and tips, gilt lettering to spine, copiously illustrated with engraved images and patterns (a few printed in color), 570 pp. This collection does, however, appear to be lacking any originally issued folding color fashion plates. Moderate to heavy soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with cracking to the front joint and bumping/fraying to tips. Front hinge is taped on the inside gutter and appears to have been glued at some point, but the binding holds firmly. Inside, apart from mild age toning and occasional marginal soiling, a clean and unmarked copy. The June-December 1857 bound issues of Godey's Lady's Book and Magazine, an American women's magazine that was published in Philadelphia from 1830 to 1878. It was the most widely circulated magazine in the period before the Civil War, with a circulation of 150,000 in 1860. Each issue contained poetry, articles, and engravings created by prominent writers and other artists of the time. Sarah Josepha Hale (author of 'Mary Had a Little Lamb') was its editor from 1837 until 1877 and only published original, American manuscripts. Hale took advantage of her role and became influential as an arbiter of American taste. She used some of her influence to further several causes for women. For example, she created a regular section with the heading 'Employment for Women' beginning in 1852 to discuss women in the workforce. Publisher Louis Godey boasted that in 1859, it cost $105,200 to produce the Lady's Book. Beginning in 1853, almost every issue included an illustration and pattern with measurements for a garment to be sewn at home. A sheet of music for piano provided the latest waltz, polka or galop. Famous contributors included Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Washington Irving, James Kirke Paulding, William Gilmore Simms, Nathaniel Parker Willis and Frances Hodgson Burnett.
