In the 1860s Godey's considered itself the "Queen of Monthlies" and had by far the largest circulation of any magazine in the US. Sarah Josepha Hale, known as "The Lady Editor," published only original American manuscripts. She was an early advocate of women's rights arguing for the retention of property rights by married women, advancement of women's wages, better working conditions for women, and the reduction of child labor. She also funded the origins of Vassar College, and was the author of twenty-four books and numerous poems, including the nursery rhyme, "Mary Had a Little Lamb". Hale's editorial mandate was "...to provide quality material to benefit and educate the female reader and to fulfill moral instruction for women's assuagement." As such, she held up Queen Victoria as a role model of femininity, morality, and intellect, As demonstrated herein, one of the most popular features of Godey's Lady's Book was the La Belle Assemble. Each month, beautifully illustrated hand-tinted fashion plates showed the latest styles in women's fashions. More than 150 women were employed to hand tint the plates for each issue at a reported cost of $8,000 per issue. Black and white steel and copper engravings were also used to illustrate the published articles.
