Description: Russian Imperial Glass Goblet Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich Gold Cypher Featured here is a RUSSIAN IMPERIAL GLASS GOBLET WITH THE MONOGRAM AND CROWN OF GRAND DUKE SERGEI MIKHAILOVICH RUSSIAN IMPERIAL GLASS FACTORY ST. PETERSBURG REIGN OF ALEXANDER II (1855-1881) The Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich was fifth son (6th child) of Grand Duke Michael Nikolaivich and a first cousin of Alexander III who was emperor of Russia from 1881-1894. The Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich was close friends with Tsarevich Nicholas II but they grew apart upon Nicholas's marriage and accession to the throne. The Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich was executed one day after the Czar and his family in 1918. He fought back on the day of his execution as he had the feeling that they would be executing him. He is considered to be a saint in the Orthodox Church. After the Communist regime collapsed, the mineshaft where the Grand Duke was killed with his relatives became a site of religious pilgrimage and an orthodox chapel was built there. The delicate glass on a hollow baluster-shaped foot, one side finely etched and gilded with an Imperial monogram height: 11 cm. (4.5 in). This goblet was created at the Russian Imperial Glass Factory which make it quite a special piece. The factory was set up for the sole purpose of creating pieces for the Russian royal family, no commercial pieces were ever created there. Goblets were created circa 1870. Capacity: Slightly over 4 oz. This goblet is part of an original set of 5. Each goblet was individually made so no two are exactly alike therefore the goblet you receive will have slight variation from the one pictured. Exquisite, has a fantastic high pitched ring / chime when toasted with another one!
