Routlege's books were classic children picture books. Pages were single-sided and made of HEAVY linen cloth. The original source of this page is a scare children's book with stunning chromolithographs. The previously under-appreciated art of early children's book is just now being corrected. However, because they were for children, most have not survived in good shape, with may a pen or crayon scribble. NOTE: Condition is fairly sound due to heavy linen cloth. However, at more than 150 years old, these civil-war era prints due have some wear and tear and minor soiling. Please inspect picture for faults. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
