Description: Glasgow sits on the River Clyde and is the most populous city in Scotland and the fourth-most populous city in the United Kingdom, as well as the 27th largest city by population in Europe. In 2020, it had a population of 635,640. It was reputed to have been founded by the Christian missionary Saint Mungo in the 6th century and grew over the following centuries. The first bridge over the River Clyde was recorded around 1285, the University of Glasglow in 1451 and elevation of the “Bishopric” to become the “Archdiocese of Glasgow” in 1492 increased the town’s religious and educational status and landed wealth. Its early trade was in agriculture, brewing and fishing, with cured salmon and herring being exported to Europe and the Mediterranean. Glaslow’s population had surpassed that of Edinburgh by 1821. The development of civic institutions included the City of Glasgow Police in 1800. Growth continued and by the end of the 19th century it was one of the cities known as the ‘Second City of the Empire”. Argyle Steet is a major thoroughfare in the city center of Glasgow, with Buchanan Steet and Sauchiehall Street, it is one of the main shopping streets in the city. It the longest of the three by distance, 2.1 miles and originally known as “Westergait”. It led west from Trongate to the city’s West Gate out of the city’s walls. The 1970s saw the construction of the Glasgow Inner Ring Road changed the line of Argyle, the eastern half now terminating underneath the Kingston Bridge approach viaduct. This card of “Argyle Street & Trongate” in what I think the 1920s, capturers an early era on a busy street” with “Double Decker” buses and pedestrians. It looks like an interesting part of the street with a “Saloon” where you can “Learn to Shoot”. The card, published by the “Castle Series Post Cards” and is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clean image and reverse. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
