Born in Messina on February 9, 1903, in the 1920s Giuseppe Migneco spread to Milan, where he took part in the Corrente movement and where he remained until his death in 1997.In 1937 he was among the founders of the Corrente movement , which brought together artists from different cultural backgrounds with the common intention of opening up to modern European culture, rejecting the cultural isolation imposed by Fascist policy. Artists with very different visions of art flowed into Corrente over time, united initially to reject outdated canons of painting, who would later take different paths, such as Arnaldo Badodi, Birolli, Broggini, Cassinari, Cherchi, Gauli, Guttuso, Manzù, Morlotti , Paganin, Sassu, Valenti and Vedova. In the postwar period Migneco refined his taste for “social realism,” being influenced by Mexican mural painters. One of his admirers calls him a “wood carver who sculpts with a brush.” The protagonists of his canvases have hard, square faces, marked by time, labor fatigue, and the pain of war. The colors are bright and strokes sharp and marked. The artist is often inspired by pastoral scenes, fishermen and peasants. A constant social denunciation, characterized by the use of dramatic, blurred color, inspired by Van Gogh's canvases, is evident in many paintings of this period. In the 1950s, the now established reputation established Giuseppe Migneco among the masters of contemporary Italian art. He exhibited in the most prestigious national and foreign galleries: Gothenburg, Boston, Paris, Stuttgart, New York, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Zurich. He participated in five editions of the Venice International Art Exhibition (1948, 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1958) and from 1948 in five editions (the V, VI, VII, VIII and XI) of the Rome Quadriennale . His colors, always strong and vivid, are reminiscent of his Sicily, with violent and sharp strokes; the hard and courageous faces make his canvases an expression of existential struggle, in a continuous and profound confrontation with humanity and the events that besiege it. His work is shot through with a consciousness and hope for freedom and memory, beyond the absurd loneliness of existence. Migneco passed away in Milan on February 28, 1997. Much, and by many, has been written about Migneco. Professional critics, as well as poets and men of letters such as Quasimodo and Sciascia, have highlighted his fundamental expressionistic vein, present even where realism, from which his painting seems to be inspired, manifests itself with sharper contours. This realist component has sometimes been traced back to a broader historical context, to a cultural or ideological choice that identified the reasons for realism with those of social commitment and denunciation. However, beyond contingent motives, Migneco's realism seems to derive from a deep humanistic vein: the human subject appears central and inalienable, even when it is not directly present, as in still life or landscape (a genre that Migneco cultivated little). There is no contradiction, then, between his material and earthy expressionism, linked to the harsh concreteness of living and, to the contemporary, treated in a formal composure of the classical type, and a lucid realism, capable of restoring people, animals, things, and pain and toil, to an ancestral essentiality, with an emotionally participatory and intellectually detached attitude, far from any sentimentalism. An artist, therefore, in balance, constantly animated by a tension that led him, towards the end of the 1930s, in the period of Corrente , to reconnect with Van Gogh, revisiting him in an introspective key, a tension that also animated his last pictorial season between the 1970s and 1980s, open to new solutions. The greens and ochre yellows of the youthful years and the colorful palette of the mature age were succeeded by acid hues, from red to black, passing through purple and the wide range of blues.
