Description: 10 Pounds, P-30. Security strip! Front and back shown. The currency of Gibraltar is the Gibraltar pound, which is pegged to the British pound sterling at a one-to-one exchange rate. The Government of Gibraltar is responsible for issuing both coins and banknotes of this currency. Prior to 1872, Gibraltar's currency system was quite complex, relying on the real, which included British, Spanish, and Gibraltarian coins. From 1825, the Spanish real de plata was linked to the pound at a rate of 1 Spanish dollar to 4 shillings and 4 pence, equivalent to approximately 21.67 pence today. However, in 1872, the Spanish currency became the exclusive legal tender in Gibraltar. The introduction of the pound as the sole currency occurred in 1898, following the significant decline of the Spanish peseta during the Spanish"American War, initially utilizing British coins and banknotes. In the same year, sterling coins were established as the only legal tender, although the Spanish peseta remained in circulation until the onset of the Spanish Civil War. Since 1927, Gibraltar has produced its own banknotes, and it began minting its own coins in 1988. The decimalization of Gibraltar's currency took place in 1971, coinciding with the UK's transition, changing the system from 1 pound equaling 20 shillings and 240 pence to a new system where 1 pound equals 100 pence.
