Geronimo Chiricahua Apache warrior medicine man Old West 1/6 12" custom figure

Description: This is a custom figure commemorating possibly the greatest Apache war leader of the old West, Geronimo. The Apache were very loyal to their friends, devoted to family, and fierce warriors in battle, An Apache could travel 50 miles on foot without stopping and were among the best guerilla fighters in history. This nomadic people were called Apachu (enemy) by the Pueblo people. The name was adopted by the Spanish invaders in the 16th Century, then by the Americans. The Spanish and Mexicans would be locked in a bitter, brutal struggle with the Apache for 330 years. The Spanish offered bounty for Apache scalps and forced captives into slavery to work their silver mines. On June 16th 1829 an Apache baby was born into the fray. He was called Goyalee (Goyathlay) "One Who Yawns". It was not until many years later he would be given a name that struck fear into the hearts of his enemies throughout the Southwest. Goyathlay was married when he was 17 to Alope. The young couple had three children. On March 5th, 1851 the Apache band was camped outside of Janos. The men were in town trading. The Apache at the camp were mostly women and children. A company of 400 Mexican troops led by Colonel Jose Maria Carrasco attacked the camp killing anything that moved. When the men returned to their camp the found the village massacre. Goyathlay's mother, wife, and children were among the dead. Goyathlay's chief, Mangas Coloradas sent him to Cochise for help to seek revenge against the Mexican soldiers. It was in the battle that followed that Goyathlay was given a name that people feared from that day on. There are two versions of how the name Geronimo came about. Goyathlay was so intent on vengeance against the Mexicans that during the battle he continually attacked the Mexicans armed with a knife, ignoring a continuous hail of bullets. Some historians believe the Mexican soldiers were heard to be appealing to Saint Jerome for help during this deadly attack while other historians feel that it was the Mexican soldiers mispronouncing Goyathlay's name. From that day forward Geronimo was a fierce warrior and excellent war leader. Geronimo hated Mexicans from then on. He and his band attacked Mexicans every time the opportunity presented itself. For more than thirty years Geronimo would fight Mexicans and the US Government whenever and however he could. Geronimo had skills as a healer to go along with his fighting ability. It was said that he could also see future events. While he was not that popular with other Apache he and his abilities were well respected. Geronimo's lack of popularity among Apaches stemmed from his unwillingness to surrender to the US Government. Other Apaches feared harm form US soldiers as payback for Geronimo's actions. Geronimo would "surrender" from time to time but would eventually jump the reservation and lead another band back to war. Geronimo eventually surrendered for the last time to General Nelson Miles in 1886. Geronimo told General Miles "Once I moved like the wind. Now I surrender to you and that is all". Part of the reason for Geronimo's surrender was an Apache named Chato. Chato had surrendered with Cochise in 1872. Chato would become an Apache scout along with others, under General Crook and then later with General Nelson Miles. It was said that the final surrender of Geronimo could not have been accomplished if not for Chato and his Chiricahua scouts. When Geronimo surrendered he was sent to Florida as a prisoner....along with Chato and the Apache scouts that had helped track Geronimo down. Geronimo was later moved to Alabama, then Oklahoma. He participated in the 1904 World's Fair selling pictures and autographs. Geronimo died in Oklahoma in 1909. Please Note- the gunbelt and holster are custom made. the metal Colt and metal Winchester are nicely done from stevos. Please also note-The figure doesn't look exactly like Geronimo but there is a bit of a resemblance, especially Geronimo in battle. sold as is. stand incuded. Please note the following-when a figure is a custom figure that means it is not a licensed product,or "official" but something the customizer did by combining figures and accessories from different makers and toy releases to come up with the custom figure or figures. I started customizing figures a few years back because I couldn't find more than a handful of "official" releases and unable to find figures of people I wanted to collect. I checked in to the market of custom figures. Most of the custom figures available back then cost several hundred dollars, so, I started doing my own. Because I needed to support my new hobby, I started selling some custom figures. My prices reflect my acquisition cost, time involved, and some profit. Thanks for the look, have fun shopping!Shipping and Handling as follows: Domestic-priority- $15.00 1st item, $8.00 each additional item. items are normally shipped out within a day or two of cleared payment.
