Description: This is a beautiful replica of the Prussian medal, Pour le Mérite, the highest award of the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire after 1871. It was established in 1740 by Frederick II. During WWI, the medal was awarded to fighter pilots upon the downing of 16 to 20 enemy aircraft. The number was raised to 30 towards the end of the war. Aces Max Immelmann and Oswald Boelcke were the first airmen to receive the award. It was awarded to Germany's highest-scoring ace, Manfred von Richthofen, in January 1917. This is a full size, two sided medal which is worn on the neck. Twelve inches of the appropriate 55mm wide ribbon is included. It is just over 50mm wide. I have sold hundreds of these medals over the years. You will not be disappointed.
