Description: GEORGES ROUAULT - Virgin of the Seven Swords (Vierge aux sept glaives) - photogravure after the gouache of 1926. Rouault reworked a photogravure plate after the same gouache to create plate LIII from Miserere series published in 1948. The sheet is 28 1/4 x 21 1/2 inches, the image is 22 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches (so the plate mark is slightly smaller than the original which was a legal requirement in Europe for photogravures). The vast majority of people cannot tell the difference between the actual drypoint and the photogravure reproduction of the drypoint. Photogravures were perfected int he later 19th century as a means of creating an accurate (deceptive) copy of the original. So frame it and who will know.
