Description: DETAILS: Original pinback button issued to oppose the candidacy of Lurleen Wallace, the wife of segregationist Governor George Wallace, for Governor of Alabama. Her husband was term-limited from running for a third term. In order to get around the term limit restriction and promote continued segregation, George Wallace had his wife run as his surrogate. Like her husband, she too was a segregationist and ran on the doctrine of strict enforcement of racial segregation of African Americans in the state. As a twist of irony, she was diagnosed with cancer shortly after her announcement and though she won the election, she was only able to serve a few short months before she passed.
